The story of Khoja Ali and an old "sedition law"
In the 1520s, Fernao Mendes Pinto, a Portuguese, visited Kedah. This is a part of his report of his visit.
Upon arrival, he was made known of a royal proclamation circulating at that time.
In the proclamation, nobody in Kedah was allowed to discuss, question, criticise or in any way talk about the regicide of the Kedah's old Ruler by his son (who became the new Ruler) and the subsequent marriage of his son with the old Ruler's wife ( who of course happened to be the son's mother) whom the son had earlier gotten pregnant.
Note: the mother of all scandals. Pardon the pun.
Khoja Ali was an agent of the Captain of Portuguese in Melaka. He was caught gossiping about the prohibited subject with a merchant from Petani and some friends after some of the new Ruler's men overheard their conversation.
The new Ruler felt "humiliated and shamed" (note: har har har) and instantly ordered them to be executed.
They were soon executed by a method called "gregoge."
Mr Pinto described "gregoge" as a method of execution by - hold on tight, stop eating now and be ready for visions involving utter cruelty - "sawing a live man to death, starting with the feet, then the hands, the neck, and the chest, all the way down the back to the bottom of the spine, which is the way I saw them all afterwards."

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said Islam and its followers are now being tested by new threats under the guise of humanism, secularism, liberalism and human rights.
He said this mindset appeared to be becoming a new form of religion which was fast expanding locally and abroad.
"They call it humanrightism, where the core beliefs are based on humanism and secularism as well as liberalism."
